The existing circuit is located in the townlands of Gorteen, Ardoughan, Kilemoremoy, Belleek, Ballina, Quignalecka, Quignashee, Ballyholan, Behy More, Corimla South, Carrownlabaun, Bunnyconnellan West, Rathreedaun, Drumsheen and Bunnyconnellan East, Co. Mayo. The proposed development will consist of: (i) The replacement (“restringing”) of the existing overhead line circuit conductor wires with a new higher capacity conductor including installation of a new fibre communication connection. (ii) The replacement of 20 no. of the 63 no. existing Intermediate Polesets (IMPs) with similar polesets. Any replacement polesets will be constructed at, or immediately adjacent to the existing structures that they will replace, will be along the same alignment as the existing line, with a height difference of between 1-2 metres, with the exception of IMP52 where the height difference will be 4 metres. (iii) The relocation of IMP49 on the Behy Road (townland of Ballyholan), to be replaced with 2 no. new polesets (IMP49 and IMP49A) to the east and west of the existing poleset, along the route of the existing line. (iv) The replacement of 3 of the 13 no. existing steel towers (angle masts) with similar structures. (v) The carrying out of civil works for tower foundation strengthening at 3 no. locations and monopole-foundation strengthening at 1 no. location and bar member replacement works at 3 no. locations. (vi) The replacement of hardware and fittings at all locations. (vii) The replacement of crossarms at 20 no. locations. (viii) All associated works within the existing Glenree and Moy substations to accommodate the uprated 110kV overhead line. (ix) Other temporary associated and ancillary development works required for the purpose of the uprate, including construction compounds, the installation of silt traps, silt fences, access tracks, ground protection mats and temporary watercourse crossings. (x) All associated site development works above and below the ground to gain access to the existing structures including vegetation clearance, remedial works on concrete shear blocks, replacement of individual tower members and bolts, replacement of hardware and insulators, replacement of dampers, installation of line identification and danger notices and anti-climbing guards, the provision of temporary access routes and other ancillary works necessary to facilitate the proposed development. The planning application is accompanied by a Natura Impact Statement.
