You don't need planning permission for a fence or wall up to 1.2m high at the front of your property (facing a road), or up to 2m high at the side or rear. Anything taller needs planning permission.

- 1.Front means facing a public road -- the 1.2m limit applies to walls and fences forward of the house.
- 2.Side and rear boundaries: up to 2m without permission.
- 3.Gates and gateways are exempt up to 2m high.
- 4.The structure must not obstruct sightlines or create a traffic hazard at an entrance.
- 5.Security toppings (razor wire etc.) and walls in ACAs / around protected structures need permission.
- 6.Party-boundary disputes are a civil matter -- planning exemption doesn't settle who owns the boundary.
