Do You Need Planning Permission for a Solar Panels in Ireland?
Since October 2022, solar panels on a house roof need no planning permission and have NO area limit anywhere in Ireland. Other buildings are unlimited outside the 43 Solar Safeguarding Zones near airports; inside a zone they are capped. Ground-mounted panels are exempt up to 25 sq m.

- 1.The old 12 sq m / 50%-of-roof limit for houses was abolished by S.I. No. 493 of 2022 -- advice repeating it is out of date.
- 2.Panels must sit within 50cm of the roof plane and not protrude above the ridge; a setback from the roof edge applies.
- 3.Solar Safeguarding Zones (glint/glare protection near 43 airports and aerodromes) restrict non-house buildings only -- houses are unlimited even inside a zone.
- 4.In an SSZ, apartment buildings are capped at 300 sq m per roof and require written notification to the council within 4 weeks of starting.
- 5.Free-standing (ground-mounted) panels: max 25 sq m, max 2m high, within the garden, behind the front building line.
- 6.Protected structures and ACAs are outside the exemption -- permission needed.
